I've downloaded the drivers for the HP Laserjet 5000 from HP's site for OS X, but I have no idea how to install the thing. Can anyone be of any help?

You shouldn't have to download anything. Try going to your Printer Setup Utility in OSX and just add it and see if that works for you.
