The printer prints copies in a very light grey colour. I would like it to give a normal black print. It is the driver. If so where do I get an update for the driver. Or what else can it be.

Test the printer because it sounds as if you are either printing in grey scale color or the black toner is running out.

To me it sounds like some sort of eco-mode, where they apply only 50% of the toner. But yeah: Turn off the printer, turn it on but hold down that main button until it prints its test page to see whether it's a hardware problem.

I'm not aware of any printer driver that chooses eco-mode as the default setting. (You could check that in the printing dialogue.
