HTML editors fall into two categories:
- Source editors, which are basically text editors that show you the HTML source code and let you edit it. They may also highlight code in different colours and provide features to help you with formatting. A good example of this type is BBEdit by BareBones software.
- WYSIWYG editors, which let you edit a page while viewing all the formatting, tables and features. Commercial apps like this include Macromedia's Dreamweaver. I haven't used this sort of software in a while (I prefer to edit code), so the only freeware one I can speak for is Netscape Composer, which is excellent.
I'm certain there are plenty of great freeware editors in both categories.

If you want to do some simple WYSIWYG HTML editing, I suggest downloading Nvu (http://www.nvu.com). It's an updated and enhanced version of the Mozilla Composer which itself was a simple graphic HTML editor.
