Huge gap between icons in menu bar

Lately the menu bar will randomly throw in a huge gap between icons. Initially I thought it was a specific app, but now it's happening with all sorts of random icons there...definitely not the same icon each time.

The icons you see on the left are the ones I launched after the gap appeared.

Restarting my machine seems to be the only solution to removing the gap.

I've also tried trashing the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist pref but that didn't do the trick.

Something very similar has happened to me once or twice when menu bar items were present but somehow invisible, and positioning my cursor where they should be seemed to revive them!

Are you expecting other icons in the gap? If not, does this gap appear when starting the Finder, with icons shuffling about for the first few seconds? Have you tried Force Quitting/relaunching the Finder (from the Apple Menu, for instance) and seen if that sorts it out?

I am not expecting other icons. It's just a dead space between active icons. It basically will be fine and then all of the sudden the gap will appear for seemingly no reason.

Force quitting Finder doesn't seem to have any results.
