I can hear sounds (i.e. Alerts, iTunes) but not speech.

Okay, I'm using OS X, 10.3.9, and it's been a while since I've used speech for anything, but the other day I was attempting to have an Acrobat pdf read outloud, and no sound was coming out of the speakers. The same goes for the "test speech" things in System Preferences. I can hear alert sounds (beep, duck, etc) as well as music in iTunes, but I can't hear speech or certain sounds from Flash movies.

Is there a setting or something that I'm missing? Something that I need to download so it will work again? Any info would be more than I've got.

I was just about to write a similar post, when I just saw this thread.

I get no sound when viewing video clips in browser. Gonna have to try the solution when get home :)
