I cannot play DVDs on my iMac?

What do I need to do/software - to be able to play my dvds?

Video or audio DVD's?

iTunes plays audio and is quite good. Quicktime would be the default video player, but there are many free ones to choose from. I prefer VLC.

The default DVD player is DVD Player. It can be found in the Applications folder.
