i can't delete my trash

Thanks but i managed to delete almost everything in my trash with the Terminal window. I'm wondering if this is a band aid solution however? I wanted to verify and possibly repair my main HD but when i go to the disk utility, even after high lighting the drive the buttons to repair or verify are greyed out. Anyone know why i can't verify my main partition? My second partition seems to be o.k.

You have to boot off the OS CD to run Disk Utility to Verify or Repair the Drive.
