i can't open .dmg files, please help.

i can download files from the internet that are .dmg, but i can't get them to open. am i missing some software or something? i have an ibook g4. i get this error message:

Click a .dmg file and type Command (Apple) I or choose Get Info from the Finder's File Menu.

You'll get the info window. You'll see towards the bottom a "Open With" section. Set that to Open All files like this with DiskImageMounter.app.

See how you go.
 
If you do perform the 'Finder' 'File, Get Info' menu item selection or 'Command I', on the selected '.dmg' file, and then select the 'Open with:'s pop-up menu's 'DiskImageMounter' menu item ... also, consider clicking on the 'Change All...' button, and the related dialog box'es 'Continue' button.
 
i tried these things just now, but the same error message pops up. also when i want to connect my ipod, i have to plug it in, restart and then i can see my ipod on my desktop and in itunes. am i missing some kind of install something?
 
should i take my ibook to the apple store? i never bought a plan. do they still fix stuff if you don't buy the extra protection or whatever it's called?
