The USB cable is the printer's original one, supplied by HP, should be OK,.
Checked the printer with a Windows PC, there it works, no HW issues.
At first I installed the Gutenprint driver, then activated it in System Preferences.
All apps nicely printed (even there was a message in the print panel warning that ink levels are low), and when finished, the job disappeared from the list -- but the printer does not print out the page!
I have installed and run Print Therapy 6.0.4, which found everything in good order.
Then I have gone to the CUPS admin web interface, which confirmed that a K80 is connected.
I printed a test page from the CUPS admin, which reported back that the test page printed successfully.
Nice to know, but the printer actually DID NOT print anything!
In the second attempt I downloaded, as recommended at
http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/hpijs
three items: (1) hpijs-3.9.2-ub.dmg, (2) Foomatic-RIP 4.0.0 and (3) Ghostscript: gplgs-8.64so-ub.dmg
and installed them all.
