ibook battery charge indicator

When fully charged my ibook battery lasts about 2-3 hours. The indicator falls to only around 86% charge and then with no warning the computer switches off. Is this normal?

Thax for the info, but how do I calibrate the battery?
1. Plug in the power adapter and fully charge your portable computer's battery until the light on the power adapter plug changes to green and the onscreen meter in the menu bar indicates that the battery is fully charged.
2. Disconnect the power adapter and use your portable. When your battery gets low, you will see the first low-battery warning dialog on the screen. Continue to use your portable until it automatically goes to sleep; at that point the battery has been sufficiently drained for calibration.
3. Connect the power adapter and leave it connected until the battery is fully charged again.

While calibrating your battery can help, as your battery ages the maximum charge your battery can achieve will decrease. Thus 100% charge may last 4 hours with a new battery and after a few years barely last an hour. How fast your battery "dies" depends on the number of charge cycles the battery undergoes.

Coconut battery is a nice freeware app/widget that will let you know what percentage of your battery's capacity remains and how may charge cycles your battery has been through.

This is a nice little freeware app. It told me that my battery is at 98% of original charge capacity after about ten months since I purchased my iBook. I've heard that still having that much capacity after almost a year is pretty good, so I must be doing something right with the battery. Download Coconut Battery from the link above and run it once a month or so to keep an eye on things.

Instead of download another app just launch System Profiler (Apple Menu > About this Mac > More Info ~or~ Applications/Utilities/System Profiler) and select "Power" under the hardware tab. [Note: that's in Tiger only]
