iBook boot up and video problems

I'm looking at an iBook (a friend's) that is running OS X 10.2.8. The machine sometimes boots up and sometimes doesn't. In addition, the video will flicker, black out, come back and then appear to freeze up.

I have run fsck and it appeared to repair some problems on the disk. I tried to run permissions but the video/freeze problems occurred and now I am having trouble booting up at all.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

If this is one of the dual usb G3 iBooks (not a Clamshell iBook or G4 iBook), then I'm guessing you have the bad logic board problem that plagued these iBooks. There is, unfortunately, nothing you can do about it unless it still qualifies for the logic board replacement program. You can go to Apple's support website and on the lower right enter your iBook serial number. It will tell you when it was purchased and if it has AppleCare coverage.

If you find that it doesn't have AppleCare and is not eligible for the logic board replacement, then your best bet is to sell it for parts or strip it and sell each part on ebay individually. You could take a shot in the dark, spend a lot to get a working logic board, replace it and hope that is the problem, but it just isn't worth the effort.

Being mainly a PC guy (sorry about that. I was just born that way), I suspected one of three things: Hard drive issues (best possible scenario), video graphic issues (next best) and then (the worst of all possibilities) the logic board. I wasn't aware of a known problem, but it was an unfortunately good guess. I believe his AppleCare just ran out out at the beginning of this month. I will get the serial number from him, if possible just to be sure.

Thanks!

It's the logic board issue and it's no longer covered by the replacement program (that ended in March of this year). Replacing it yourself isn't worth the money involved either ($400 to $600 for a new logic board, parts only). AppleCare should have run out for that model between April and Oct of this year for most users.

I tried getting mine fixed since I bought it new, unopened from an authorized reseller in late Dec of 2003 / early Jan of 2004 and didn't have much luck (still trying), even though it was less than the 3 years claimed on the replacement program (http://www.apple.com/support/ibook/faq/).
