Hello:

The on screen brightness control slider has vanished and the brightness keys don't work on my dual USB g3 ibook running 10.4.3. I've seen two other posts with the same problem but no indication of an explanation or fix. I've tried repairing permissions.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. My screen is dim and it's hard to work.

Thanks

Hello

Thanks for trying to help but the F keys don't work and there is no brightness contol in the Display window. Further research revealed this is a problem related to Panther and it has affected both iBooks and some Powerbooks. As far as I can tell Apple hasn't been big on acknowledging it and there's no fix other than downgrading the OS (which hoses any software I have requiring 10.4)

My screen is stuck on a dim setting. Others have had their screens stuck on the very brightest setting, meaning they get zero battery life. I am pretty disgusted at the moment. It feels like I'm being forced into considering a new machine. I'm curious about whether the problem exists on ibooks that shipped with Tiger. Anyway, thanks again.

Silly me...

Thank God you mentioned the F keys problem - because I just remembered... I had the same problem!!! (It is still 11 AM, so the brain's a bit slow... ;-))

Very easy to solve...

You have to change your keyboard settings: go to
Apple Menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard&Mouse:
select "Keyboard" and then you absolutely must DE-SELECT "Use the F1-F12 keys to control software features" - and now it should all work again. (You can still use the F1-F12 keys, but have to press "fn" at the lower left-hand side of your keyboard to make them work.)

Hope this does help.
