Hi guys, I need some help - I need to reinstall the system software on my G3 ibook 12" 900MHz but cant find my install CD... I have found my restore CD's but they don't seem to help (the harddisk was corrupted so a full install is needed :( ). Is there anywhere I can get a startup disk from, or if I take it into a shop would they be able to install the required software? I would prefer to have a copy of my own though so I don't have to go through this again!

Any help is appreciated :o
Cheers.

Was it running Mac OS X Server? If so, you'd need to provide your serial number to prove ownership.

If it was running client, this is kinda the wrong forum to post in, but you could try taking it into an Apple store. You may get a friendly tech who's willing to help you out. They should have restore media for each machine on hand. :)

Firstly, thankyou for your help Michael...

Ok, by 'Mac OS X Server' do you mean does it have Mac OS X as the operating software? If so then - yes, it ran on OS X (plus it also had classic? I think its called, which I never bothered to use).

The machine was given to me by my sister about a year ago (she purchased it new sometime in 2004) & its still registered in her name, so taking it into a shop isn't a problem - the only issue I've got with them reinstalling it for me means that I'm still left without a start-up disk... so if it happens again I'll have to take it back in again!

Do you have any idea if they would be able to provide me with a copy aswell (can they order copies?) or does it look like Im just gonna have to look at this as a long term pain-in-the-ass type situation?

Anyways, sorry if I went on a bit too much! Thanks again for your help, it's greatly appreciated ;-)
Cheers,
Greg.

Or just buy a retail copy of OS X. From the factory there's no "restore CD" included, just a copy of OS X 10.2.x on CD (a grey OEM disc) and a disc for OS 9. There's also a disc for some of the programs that came pre-installed, like the encyclopedia and iTunes, QuickTime, a game that I can't remember the name of, etc.

you can get cheaply OS X disks (10.2, 10.3 7 10.4) from OWC. One word advice I have is to run at least 10.3 on that machine. Once you do load OS X on go over straight to Apple and go to the Downloads page (in the support Tab) and look of the "combo" update (like the 10.3.9 Combo) to take it straight through the point updates with one download.

Thanks mdnky & Satcomer,
I'll go straight to the OWC link now & see if I can get it sorted out... once again, much appreciated for your help.

Cheers,
Greg.
