Can I replace the cd drive in my ibook g3 with a hard drive? Have 30gb hard drive and need bigger. I have done some replacements on other computers, but not on ibook. Is this drive swappable? And if so, is there a recommended drive? Please advise.

Never heard of this being done.If all you need is more storage space, then why not use a external drive? Ibooks are not user friendly to repair even for a apple tech.To change out your hard drive or cd rom takes about 45mins and a good deal of "WTF!" If a external drive is not what you need then your Ibook should handle up to a 120gb internal drive.

You can just swap the 30GB with something bigger. If you've never worked on an ibook I wouldn't advise it, even if you have worked on other computers. Main reason because even if you do get far enough to take the top case off, if you're not really careful with the power button connection to the logic board, you could end up with a doorstop on your hands instead of a computer. I've done enough ibooks to where I can just about do one asleep but whenever I get to that connection and it gets stubborn from being fused on from heat, I still get a little queasy. But if your interested in converting your optical into a second hard drive, this may work.

You guys are the best. I have an external hard drive, but keep it attached to my macbook pro that I use for a desktop replacement. The ibook I take to work, so dont want to tote around an external. The cd doesn't work correctly. It was doing ok, but all of a sudden when loading cds to my ipod, the audio became scratchy and the cd skipped. It was not a defective disk. I could not figure out what was wrong with my drive, so decided to use the space it was taking up with a hard drive. Anyway, this whole idea seems to be over my head. Any advice about the cd drive problem? If I decided to get another little mac to take to work that would not be over $300, what would you suggest? The ibook is ideal for my use, but very unhandy with no drive.
