iBook G3 Dual USB DVD Master Slave Configurations.

Sometimes a question comes up about problems in upgrading an iBook G3 dual usb cdrom drive to a dvd drive.

Here is what I've found to work.

The iBook G3 dual usb has the cdrom connected as a slave drive and the hard disk is connected as a master drive.

If you have a master dvd drive and you install a dvd master drive you have then got two master drives sharing one ide bus and it won't work.

One of the solutions is to change the dvd drive to a slave drive by a a small switch if it has one but a lot of slimline dvd drives don't and with some of them you can change them into a slave drive by flashing (on a PC) with the right slave firmware.

A easier solution is to make the iBook G3 dual usb hard disk the slave drive (by changing some hard disk jumpers) and keep the dvd drive as the master drive.

This works for me on my iBook G3 600mhz dual usb.

I have also flashed a toshiba master dvd drive (m/s) with that models slave firmware (csel) and that also works in my iBook G3 600mhz dual usb with the hard drive being the usual master drive.
