ibook G4 DVD problem

Hi there:

I'm having trouble, suddenly, with my DVD drive.
My ibook g4 does not read DVD's that I've inserted and when I open up the DVD drive, it does not play the movie/New Yorker cd's, the black screen comes up and 'Not Permitted' flashes with every attempt to start.

Does this make sense?
It's just not reading dvd's in any way---I just get a message that reads, You Have Inserted A Blank DVD, and then aks where I'd like to open it (which never works anyway).

Please Help!!

Thanks so much for your time.

Best,
Esther Mazakian

You could have the incorrect region code set on your computer. See this apple help file:

Changing the region code of your DVD drive
Many DVDs use a region code (a number) that corresponds to a geographic area. In order to play a DVD from Australia, for example, the code on the DVD has to match the code on the device playing the DVD.

The first time you play a DVD with a region code, your DVD drive is set to match that code. This restricts DVD Player to playing only discs with the same region code or with no region code. Generally, the region code of your DVD drive matches the region code of the DVDs available in the region where you live.

IMPORTANT: You can change the region code of your DVD drive only five times (this includes the original setting). The fifth setting of the region code is permanent.

When you insert a disc with a different region code, a dialog allows you to choose a new region code setting for your DVD drive.

Don't change the region code of your DVD drive unless you expect to play only DVDs that match the new region code in the future.

Hiya,

I have already used 4 region changes on my ibook G4 DVD player 4.0 and it still says I have one left and wish to have it set on region 2 (it's on 1 at the moment) as I live in the UK so most of my DVDs are R2. Problem is when I put in a R2 dvd and the prompt comes up to change the region I put it to R2 but when i press chande set region it comes up with an error message -70001. Can you tell me how to fix this so I can set the last region to 2? I've already searched the mac support site.

Thanks!

Esther, I've seen that symptom with the "RW" flavor of DVD.

Only cure I found is to load those puppies onto the HD via
DVDBackup (MTR hate's them, too), and burn to DVD-R.

Just a thought.
