I'm considering getting some more memory for my iBook and all i can think of shopping with is Crucial at £90.46 Inc VAT and delivery. Apple's ram is far too expensive @ £158.98! :eek:

I know my iBook can only take a 512MB stick bringing up the total to 640MB.
Will i see a nice prformance increase with more ram and how easy is it to install? I'm quite adept with building PC's but i've never worked ona notebook before.

I mainly use the system fro browsing the web and emailing but i also play games on it (Sacrifice, Dungeon Siege and Quake 2 installed at the moment) and i also do some photoshop work on it too.
 
Your iBook will accept the 1gb RAM sticks. At the time they were released, 640mb was the max. That's since changed and some sites haven't been updated. The 1GB sticks will work just fine though in an 800mhz G4 iBook. G3 models are limited to 512mb max addon due to their use of SDRAM, where the G4s use PC2700 DDR.

Other World Computing usually has a good deal on RAM, not sure if they'll ship internationally or not.
 
I did the same upgrade from crucial a while back on my 800 mhz iBook, it made a WORLD of difference. So far in my experiences with OS X once you get past 256 MB of ram everything seems a lot smoother. I noticed when I had 256 megs that with iChat and Safari open i was all out of ram and into the swap. The boost to 640 helped so much.
 
It will be fine with the iBook. Just so that you'll be more confident, here's the details on the two 'different' RAM. The iBook's and the standard PC2100

The voltage is the same (2.5V), the clock speed is the same (PC2100), they are both unbuffered, non-parity RAM sticks. Yet, the price difference is £22. Crucial is most probably thinking that Apple customers are fools who don't know a thing about computers and hence they can charge nearly a third more.

I did that with my 1 GB stick for my Powerbook and saved over £60. Works like a charm and there is no reason why you can't do that for your iBook.
 
My experience with Mac memory has been that they aren't too picky with the RAM. I've never plugged in a RAM stick that didn't work!

That said, it's all about the reliability of the RAM and the peace of mind you're getting. I buy crucial mainly because of that, knowing that it's possibly the best memory manufacturer out there (better than Kingston?). But I've never had RAM fail on me so I don't know how good/bad these generic RAM stick are.
 
I'm still torn. I would really like to buy that Transcend memory and save some money, if it means it would run properly with my iBook. I don't see any reason to spend an extra hundo if that Transcend would work fine.
 
Well thr ram arrived today. I've just installed it with absoutley no problem's.
