iBook gone belly up

My four year old iBook G4 14" starts up with the reassuring chime but doesn't get past the initial blue screen.

If I attempt to use DiskWarrior or Techtool Pro (using an external drive as the iBook's drive slot has been jammed for a some time), the computer starts up without the chime and a horrible depixelated blackish screen appears.

There has been a Leopard install disc stuck in the CD/DVD drive since last December. However, the current problem only started a few weeks ago.

I don't know whether to trash the iBook or take it to an Apple Repair shop. The warranty ran out two years ago and I will be expected to pay £60/$100 just to have it looked at, never mind having it repaired.

Can anyone shed any light on what may be wrong?

Well, I responded to your post in the "Viruses for OS X" thread but I see that the iBook has in fact bit the bullet. :( It might be in relation to the following problem:

Still, if you're inclined to do so you can perform the repair yourself with some help from this site I found just now:

I had done a self-repair on an old Apple Airport Basestation years ago when the capacitor that controlled the power unit had burnt out. Apparently, Apple had used caps that didn't meet the proper power requirements. I found these instructions that helped me solder in a replacement capacitor (with the proper specs for the power demands) and it's worked ever since.

Well this solves my problem and I am very grateful to you for your reply.

I'm not sure I am up to performing surgery on my iBook inner workings, at least not for now (actually, the information in the links you provided is quite clear).

I think I am going to have to replace the iBook with something (Dell laptop running Ubuntu?), but I'll hang on to the iBook for a while in case I feel the urge to pull it a part one day.

Cheers nixgeek.
