ibook heat issue?

A dumb question but how do i tell if my ibook fan is working? It gets very hot when im using imovie or garageband and i dont hear a fan coming on to cool it down.

I know some heat is normal but i just dont hear a fan going and im scared im going to fry my board or something. The only noise that sounds like a fan is when i put in a cd or dvd but thats probably just the cd spinning i guess. Other than that theres no noise or movement of air. It seems to get particullay hot on the left side of the trackpad.

thanks in advance to anyone who can help me :)

The fan is extremely quiet because it doesn't exist.

Remember those early titanium/aluminum Powerbooks? Those things got so hot I thought they'd spew battery acid.

The iBook can give you some good leg burn, but the heat is normal as far as I know.

The iBook G4 does have a fan - it is located on the top center just underneath the F5 key.

G3 models have a fan too, or at least the 14" ones do. It should come on by itself when it's needed.

I have an iBook, and you'll know when the fan is on. Believe me. It is loud. It turns on when I play DVDs and it drowns out the movie.

I bought a DVD player so it's all good now. The fan will only come on when it is bloody hot.

Thanks heaps to all those who responded.

it is a G4 (should have mentioned that) and it does seem to make noise when i put a dvd in so i spose thats it 'working'.

It does seem to get very hot but i guess thats relative. Hot to a new user of an ibook maybe commonplace for the ibook veterans etc. Ill accept that my ibook fan does possess greater wisdom than i and let it work when it feels it needs too :p

Again the responses were most apreciated.
