Ibook locks up in sleep mode

I got my ibook around 1 week ago.
It is the latest model, G3 700MHz, 12'', ATI Radeon with 16MB Vram, 20GB HD. Currently it is connected to my network switch and to a 5 GB ipod (firewire *g*). Besides that only a logitech optical mouse (USB) is connected.
Recently I put extra 256MB RAM into the machine.

The only thing which really gets on my nerves is that it (in some cases) does not respond when I try to wake it up.

Here is a "short" eplanation whats happening:

After using the ibook for some hours (playing games, networking surfing, graphic editing), I put it to sleep (by closing it)
Sleeping is no problem, the screen dims out while closing the lid and the pulsating white light appears in front of the ibook. The horror begins when I try to wake it up (open the lid). Normally the screen goes on and I am able to continue working. But not in this case: The screen stays black and in some cases the white light is still pulsalting. USB devices don't get power from the ibooks usb ports (normally they get power during the wake process).
Hitting keys doesn't help.If the white light pulsates while the screen is still black, it simply vanishes after I press various keys on the keyboard. Nothing else happens. Only holding the power button (reseting) brings new life into my ibook.

As I already said this problem only occurs sometimes. But it is annoying 'cause the startup process takes even more time when the machine wasn't shut down properly.

My first explanation is that I damaged something (somehow) when I inserted the extra 256 RAM (I didn't remove the batterie)
The second explanation is that it is something related to opengl. One day I played UT for OSX preview 3 and paused the game. Because I had to leave my ibook for some time it decided to go into sleep mode and froze with the same symptoms. (But this doesn't make much sense 'cause Jaguar runs HW accelerated all the time (Quartz extreme) on my ibook.

(I appologize for my humble english writing and if this topic has already been discussed before)

You forgot to mention what OS you are working in.
Check the energy saver panel. You do not want any of the boxes checked in the advanced tab.
Did you check for software updates? Go to the Apple Software update web page. It could be you need an update to correct the sleep problem.

Sorry.
I am using Mac OSX 10.2.3. Updated to the latest version via the Software update. SW update tells me to install itunes 3.01 But this version is already installed. But this doesn't seem to be related to my problem.

There is only a option tab (I am using the german version, so names can differ) in the energy saver panel. The box "wake up by administrative network access" is checked. Thats all.

I bet if you go ahead and tell Software Update to install the iTunes, it will say never mind and be gone.

Do you quit the game or program that you were working on? If you leave the window open on the desktop, that could have caused the problem. You can try hiding the window and see if that helps.

Is the machine on a network? If not, then you can uncheck that wake up by...

This happens when the battery is low. My girlfriend complained of this with her iBook and I soon realized that she would put it to sleep unplugged with a low battery. The exact situation you described occurs. This could very well be your problem. If it happens again try plugging it in, and then try to wake it up. Hope this helps. It's the only idea I have.

Thanks for the hint.
Sometimes (when I was in a hurry) I didn't plug in the power adapter right. The green light was on, indicating the ibook is connected. But it wasn't. (and it wasn't charging, draining the battery and fell into the coma) I had to move the power adapters plug some milimeter til it was really connected (orange light indicating it is charging).

Despite this rare case I still experience a lot of sleep problems ranging from kernel panics at wake up to the black screen coma. Most of 'em occur only after a long period of "sleep", or after intensive use of full screen open gl apps (games *g*), even if the ibook is connected to the power adaptor. It is really annoying.
It would be really nice if someone could post a short instruction how to zap the p ram or to reset the power management(?). Unfortunally apple doesn't provide a manual how to do this (doesn't know why) and im to lazy to search the forums at 2:11 am :p

Despite the problems I am really satisfied with my latest mac purchase (the white ibook). Opengl performance is great (for the games I want to play, like UT, and the quake "series"). Now I am able to photoshop and edit my website while being mobile. Thank god for the 1024x768 res (which isn't that much, but a higher res doesn't make sense on a 12'').

Pram Zap: command - option - p - r at restart.
hold for three chimes, then release.
