ibook not fully uploading and have to restart to work but repeats

Im hoping this is where to post. I couldnt find a place for laptops.

I bought a ibook G4. About 5 years old. Refurbished off of a great seller. Supposed to run excellent. And it did.

Then I started first hearing a faint metal on metal crackling on the left side. It was continious but went away. I heard it come back but fainter and a lot of times i dont hear anything. Then all of a sudden it would freeze. Or rather not load. i would try to open a link for ex. and it would only partially load and just sit there. Or when i go to yahoo questions i cant click submit. Partial load and it just sits there. So i have to restart to try again. It reboots really quick. And when it works it loads really quick. Till it stops again.

The battery was almost dead and I noticed since I was on it for a while it was quite hot. I dont know if this could participate with this?

Any help would be appreciated. I dont want to return this if i dont have to.
 
Sounds like the death throes of a hard drive on its way out.

If you do not have a current backup of your data on that drive (which, of course you do!), do it now. If, in fact, it is the hard drive going out, then it's only a matter of time... could be months, could be a few seconds.
