hi. my mom has an older ibook, probably 3 or 4 years old now, and the screen started to flicker and now it is completely blank and does not do anything, but the computer is still funtional, you just can't see anything. is it some how possible to hook up another mac to the ibook via firewire and gain access to its harddrive and backup the documents etc? i know i can take the HD out and get the files that way, but i would rather try an alternative method instead of tearing it apart. any ideas?

If the screen flickered and is now completely dark, see if the following Apple discussion thread helps you:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2229101

The thread mentions the possibility of a faulty backlight.

I've actually experienced both backlight issues and logic board problems. The logic board problem manifested itself in the following way: flickering, screen freezing, lines, color degradation (the "pixels" would seem to get bigger)...

If you want to see if your iBook qualifies for the "Expanded iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program," visit the following page:
