iBook slower or is it my iMagination?

I recently traded in an original clamshell (300mHz, 288 megs RAM, 30 gig HD) for a (slightly used) 700mHz icebook. The new machine has the bigger screen, more memory (384) more vRAM (16 megs as opposed to 4) faster bus...

Still it feels slower..

I don't type quickly, but I can out-pace Word, that didn't happen with the other machine. I seem to be waiting at the beach a lot more than when I had the clamshell.

I am almost willing to put up with it, because the screen real estate was really necessary, but would like the thing to be a little snappier. Are there tweaks and things that will get me up to speed?

(beside more RAM, cause the budget for that was eaten by the iceMan himself.)

Many good tips to help a 'slow' system are included in the link in Hulkaros' signature! Some are perhaps a little out of date, but MORE MEMORY, especially if you use Classic at all (adding Memory is the most effective upgrade you can do); upgrading to 10.2.6 with the combo updater, (re-loading the combo updater, if you're already running 10.2.6) will perform some system maintenance that can be helpful to speed up your system. Utilities, such as Maintain1, or OnyX, that will delete your cache files, can create very noticeable improvement, but review Hulkaros link!!

Yes, I wiped the hd, no bugs from old users, thank you ;) and installed with the original CDs, I think it was 10.2.2. I ran the combo update to 2.6. (82 megs on a 56k... don't want to have to do that again)

I'll check out the tips on the lawyer's page. The lack of pep was noticable from the get-go, so I don't think it's cache related, but I'll give anything a try.

**edit**
What do you mean Classic? My 66 Shelby Mustang? :D
There's no looking back... 9 is less than 10

Classic mode is OS X running the OS 9 environment for use with older Mac programs, would take a lot of system resources to run. If you have NO older software to use, then Classic mode probably is not a factor. Follow the tips, especially repair permissions, download a utility that perfoms maintenance on your OS X system (my post above has 2 good ones), do an FSCK (you should see how to do that in the lawyers notes). Last (should be first!), consider more RAM!

Sarcastic is such as strong word! I was just being jovial. ;) (nice to see that someone understands me though!)

I did the permissions thing, got a long list of problems, mostly associated with Stuffit. I ran it again, and came up clean. I will have to see how it goes.

Today I noticed that I was typing faster than Eudora, so I think there is some process going on, maybe related to RAM swapping, maybe not.

The thing is, I don't know if these are new problems or if I just ignored them in the clamshell because I knew it was old and grey.

So I went to get hold of Dragster as per the lawyers advice and I saw this thing called Xchek http://www.ifthensoft.com/, a software and hardware diagnostic. It might be a good bit to run, so I downloaded it.

Holy Crap is my system flocked up. The dip slip pip hip on my RAm is flipped. There is a leak in my airtight seal on the hard drrive, caused by mites or ants (XChek could not be sure which), and the flux capacitor of my processor is strained and needs me to put the system to sleep for at least a half an hour to let it get some rest!!

No wonder the thing is so slow, it's not my iMagination after all!

I forgot about the flux capacitor! I have a whole case that I got at a Serenity R Us a couple of years back, so every time I get the 'Munchenhausen Overload Warning about Essential Rights' (MOWER) window, I just automatically change it. I take the FC for granted sometimes, I forget to mention it, so sue me (I have 14 GB memory, with only 17 bytes usable, so I just barely function)

Run your Process Viewer to try to find out if you have something running that may not be necessary, slowing your system down. Get more memory...

Okay, it's working now. It might have gone down temporarily. I'll put it back in my signature soon.
