icab 2.8 finally released!!

edX

mac shaman
the long awaited update to icab is here. get it at www.versiontracker.com or www.macupdate.com

I haven't really had time to play with it yet but, here's

What's New:
Version 2.8 adds the following:

• New Cookie Manager
• New Filter Manager
• Java support under Mac OS X
• and more...

iCab seems like a decent little browser, I'll give this a shot. In the past it's crashed more than others but that may just be my system.

I love iCab, I wasn't sure development was still goin on...
Glad to hear it!

It doesn't really crash taht often on me, and it's not that beautiful, but it's super light and gets its work done. Very good D/L manager and save as web-archives option.

It's a beta. It expires when a new version is available, so you don't have to worry about it. Plus it's only 2,8Mb.

I used iCab before, but I wasnt really thrilled at the prospect of paying for a browser. I think Opera's model -- free but with ads is an OK one. If they bother you, you can pay the registration fee and remove them :p

Yeah, M$ sure turned the browser world on its head by offering Internet Exploiter for free. For better or for worse, the deed has been done, and people will certainly be loathe to pay for a browser unless it's vastly superior (at least I would be--although I'd shell out the dough to Omnigroup if Omniweb was as fast as Chimera--just because the of the social principles they espouse). :) Until Omniweb gets faster, I don't see myself paying for it.

nummi - no version of icab i have used has ever expired in 30 days. their time period is considerably longer (like about 6 mos i think - too long in my opinion, i wish they would make more regular updates). perhaps you are thinking of Opera whose free with no banner deal lasts for 30 days.

as for paying for a browser - when one of these alternative browsers gets it all together and offers all the functionality i need to cruise the net without going to exploiter or netrape, then i will glady pay the $20 - $30 they want for it. there is a big price to be paid for 'free' browsers and it is a lot more than $30.

so far the new version seems good - having some Java is nice. but i hate that the clock stopped showing. now i have to navigate back to the finder to see what time it is. this is going to be a pain. Being able to surf and see the time at the same time was one of my favorite features of icab. beisdes its superior speed once you get your prefs tweaked right.

Is it your screen size or do you have a lot of menubar app thingies? Mine shows the time just fine and the only program I have a problem with is Project builder on 800 x 600.

well, i doubt it is my screen size. might be my resolution 800x600 with thousands of colors. i do have one extra menu app and that is a lttle icon that tells you whether 9 is running or not. i don't even remember what the name of it is so that i can disable it. Anybody else know? could it be part of tinkertool? I would much rather have my clock than to know if i have 9 running.

but thanks for letting me know it is something i should be able to solve instead of just living with it. i guess if worse comes to worse, i could up my resolution, but it just gets so small it is difficult to read for my old eyes.

It's BETA (Pre 2.8, or whatever)?! EXPIRES IN 30 Days?!! And is suspect to crashing more often than other browsers (hearsay from another user)?!!!

i have been using the previous beta since around dec or before. there is no truth to that rumor about 30 day expiration - and it doesn't crash very often for me and i leave it up and running practically 24/7, only shutting it down for restarts. yes, it does crash on it's own at times, but very rarely as compared to the others i have tried leaving open this long.

get a real browser? puhleeeze:D

Ed, How can you use 800x600 with OS X? That must be awful :).

Anyways iCab is alright it doesn't stack up with omniweb or mozilla though, and I still like chimera as well, but the feature set isn't there.

Its a nice little browser for what it does. I probably wont pay for it though, because it is not worth it for me.

Ed, that sounds like ClassicSpy.
Damn iCab has made my browser choice even harder! Now I gotta decide between three strong candidates (and IE ain't one of them).
:D

genghis, i think you nailed it. now ijust have to figure out how to get rid of it:p and i don't see why you really have to decide between browsers. you can do what i do at times - run several. or at least a couple. :D

I have solved the clock problem for now. 1st i switched my resolution to 1024 x 768 and the clock came back along with classicspy. i spent an hour or so trying it like that, trying to convince myself that i could get used to it but i continuosly found the type to be too small. even when i got these forums where i could read them, i could barely see my replies as i typed them. and trying to read the menu bar and menus was rough. not to mention my icab toolbar. Granted it all looked nice, just too small. if anyone can explainto me how i get these things to be bigger in that resolution, i think i would switch. because the funny thing is - icab got even faster. it was almost instant from page to page. that would be too cool if i could only read the page then:p

so what i did was take the seconds display off my clock and it came back in 800 x 600. I really don't need seconds, but they are a nice thing to see every now and then. Like when some mozilla fanatic is screaming at you about fast page loads and you need to time it to show how icab compares:D ;) and now i have my clock back - so i can pretend that i am going to do something else besides hang out here at a predetermined time:rolleyes:

I agree, 800x600 is my preferred resolution and I can't give any good reason, just because I like it that way. If I work in Photoshop then I like it bigger for the floaters and if I am using XWindows full screen I must change it bigger because I haven't found a window manager that makes clutter as organized as Mac OSX :)

I am finding that I like iCab a whole lot for downloading stuff :) the download manager and filters are better than any browser. It still doesn't have spell check so I am using Omni for forums and the page layout (tables) has been screwed up more often than even Omni with all its troubles so I use Mozilla still for regular surfing of the web. :) Three browsers open at once for each task I have to do. We really would have a great browser if we had the filter/download manager of iCab, The Aquaness of Omni, The standards compliancy of Mozilla and the speed of Chimera. I think it's all possible, except maybe the speed of Chimera with all those features.

By the way, is there any reason that iCab isn't affected by this silk thing I installed? It's still got the same old anti aliased text.

well, i can tell the difference with silk - i did a little test of turning silk on and off. It looks really poor in the larger font sizes (remember my eye strain:p ) without silk and much better with. i agree that the difference seems to be very small at about 12-14 pts and below. and it doesn't seem to effect this text as i type it either although i have had a few instances of where the screen had to catch up to my typing and that hasn't happened in any app in a very long time for me.

one thing i have learned with the download manager is to check the option to delete the item when download is finished. if you let your download history stay on it, it really slows down after about 10-20 downloads.

i don't keep multiple browsers up all the time as i always seem to end up leaving one on some page that refreshes or has streaming ads or something that slows things down. so i keep icab up and then use the others for when i feel they would be beneficial - or demanded by the bank. But the way you describe it koelling, sounds like a great solution to me (well, except for the mozilla part:D ;) )

ooh, i just got so excited i had to come back here to jump up and down!!!

Now i can view the slide show on my mac web pages. click here to see what i mean if you haven't tried it yet. or if you just want to remember what i look like. or if you want to wax nostolgic about mwsf 2002. or if you want to see what Brian from omniweb looks like.(hey, it's my second favorite browser:D ). or if you want to see all my pics/pages and wonder just what kind of guy bothers putting up pics of that stuff :P (no public laughing at my wizard outfit ;) )

I assume this is java at work. niiice.

and another reason not to have to launch into ie again. (the list goes down!! YEAH!!)
