ichat not working properly/at all

iChat is not working right when I open it and select the person who I want to talk to and click it usually the box pops up and it has the person's screen name at the top, however when I do it now it simply says "Chat" even though I have already double clicked the person's name to start a chat. Furthermore if I try to use the menu bar to start an ichat with someone it also acts as though i didn't choose anyone.

80 percent of the time, ichat will then shut its self down and ask if i'd like to send a message to apple about its crash.

I have tried redoing the pram and also cleaning disk ultility and nothing.
I have also deleted ichat twice and reinstall it both times and still the same problem.

Well first please remember the screen names of the people in your Buddy list because you will be reseting your iChat (or any other program) by the old Mac trouble shooting method of reseting it's Preference file. Mosey to the folder /YourHardDrive/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ and delete the files com.apple.iChat.plist, com.apple.iChat.SubNet.plist & com.apple.iChatAgent.plist. Doing this will reset iChat to it's initial starting point, without the WINDOWS way of reinstalling the program. You have to think like a Mac user and not a windows user when trouble shooting a Mac.

Now if you ever accidentally delete an OS X program you can always us the install disk or software package and use the shareware program Pacifist to get the individual files you need instead of the whole program or install disk.
