iChat problem

Hello!
I was setting up my new powerbook and I am having problems with iChat (as well as MSN, ICQ and Yahoo messengers). The first thing that ran through my mind was "ah! proxy! dang!" BUT both yahoo AND iChat can logon to the networks using my desktop machine (I am at work).

Anyone have any ideas as to why I cannot connect?
iChat says that connection was lost (in a dialog box)

I *am* online, I can browse the web and check email but no chat clients.
Any clues?

Dear Admiral,

Let me get this straight so that there is no confusion:

1. You have a PowerBook (new) and a desktop Mac, in effect two machines?
2. The desktop Mac can connect to the iChat network and such alike?
3. You want to set up the PowerBook so that you can access the iChat stuff?

If the answers are yes, can I susgest that you try the following:

1. Call up the Network settings of the desktop Mac.
2. Call up the Network settings of the PowerBook Mac.

What you are looking for is that you are on the same 'domain/subnet'. Are the subnet masks, router and DNS settings the same? If not, you want to match the PowerBook settings to the desktop machine. Of course, you can't have the same IP address :)

Are you on a proxy server? Does both machines reflect the same name/address? If not, match them.

If both the PowerBook and the desktop Mac have the same settings already, then to be honest, I really don't know. Do you have the internal Firewall on the PowerBook? Turn it off if it is.

What I provide are suggestions, so good luck in your quest :)

I am at school- both machines have different IP addresses - settings are the same (well other than the IP address). The *ONLY* thing that I can think of that is different is that iChat on my desktop is a beta (iChat 2.0 (v145) ) and I think that on the laptop it is a newer version. I will look deeper into the mystery and let you know :)

I'm pretty sure that the beta iChat expired a few weeks ago!

Although I remember reading that it would popup a message saying that..

well my network settings are *identical* for both desktop and laptop (well - the IPs are different obviously). The only other thing that I can think of is the fact that I copied my addressbook files from my desktop at home to my laptop which does have intermitent problems connecting to iChat...

oh yes...forgot to mention that firewall is off.
I have been experimenting and this is what I found:

Browser: works - can browse net
email: works - can get email
ICQ Application: no go
ICQ java version from browser: works
Yahoo Application: no go
yahoo hava version from browser: works
iChat: no go

The applications have a problem, the java version works -- weird!
iChat on my desktop works FINE -- on the laptop I get an error saying "

Could not connect to AIM
The connection to the host was unexpectedly lost

Dear Admiral,

Thank you for going in to more depth on your specfics. This helps.

I have read all your comments and it seems to be a classic Firewall port numbers closed case. Ok, you said that iChat works on your desktop, but it won't for long. I too was under the impression that the Beta expired on New Years day? Weird. Which means that you will soon have the same problem on the desktop that you have on the PowerBook. So lets get this sorted...

The ICQ and Yahoo! Java are working because they are working in the Internet browser, which is, at the end of the day still using Port 80. I suspect that if you use any other Internet related product, ICQ, Limewire, MSN Messager, these will not work.

What you need to do is butter up the Network Admin person and beg them to free up the Port numbers needed for iChat. The main port number that you want to free up is 5190. More information about Port numbers are here:

I hope this helps, but I think that other users will confirm what I have said here. Good luck and I hope that the Network Admin ain't too hard.
