everytime I try to open iChat it logs in automatically as usual and then 5 seconds later just quits with no error messages or anything. HELP!

I'm having the same problem. We have 4 Macs in my house, and they all started doing the same thing this evening for no reason. They all run 10.4.2, but no updates or changes were made to our network or cable connection recently to cause this issue. Is anyone else having the same problem?

Try deleting the iChat Caches;

user>library>caches

and the iChat Preference files;

user>library>preferences

com.apple.iChat.AIM.plist
com.apple.iChat.Jabber.plist
com.apple.iChat.plist
com.apple.iChat.SubNet.plist
com.apple.iChatAgent.plist

I tried deleting those files, the Agent one wasn't there, but I deleted the others I when I try to open ichat it bounces, I get the little black triangle under, but nothing else and then the triangle disappears. I have no idea why it just started happening, it is interesting that someone else is having the same problem. To follow up it started this on the 16th here at school, I went home for the weekend and didn't have a problem, but when I came back it started again. I thought it might be that I use wireless at home and Ethernet cable here, but I haven't been able to test that theory by taking it to a hotspot, though since it won't open really at all now I don't know. The only reason I haven't tried reformatting is I haven't had time. :-/

I have exactly the same problem : ichat bounces but nothing else and then the triangle disappears. My contact list doesn't open anymore, nobody can see me or talk to me.

When I uninstall ichat applications and all ichat's preferences, Ichat menu stays in the menubar.

Open the Terminal application in your Utility folder and paste this into in and hit Return;

/Applications/iChat.app/Contents/MacOS/iChat -errorLogLevel 7

Paste the output here

If you're using a Router, bypass it and try.

Try upgrading to 10.4.2. If you already have 10.4.2, run the updater again.

Hi,

I have run the updater 10.4.2 again, opened the Terminal application and pasted /Applications/iChat.app/Contents/MacOS/iChat -errorLogLevel 7

The result was different :
minimac:~ luigi$ /Applications/iChat.app/Contents/MacOS/iChat -errorLogLevel 7
2005-10-12 17:13:10.226 iChat[322] *** Assertion failure in -[ABMutableMultiValue addValue:withLabel:], Framework/AddressBook/ABMultiValue.m:486
2005-10-12 17:13:10.228 iChat[322] WARNING: Exception while initializing service SubNet: Invalid parameter not satisfying: value != nil && label != nil && [label length] > 0

I saw there was now a problem with the AddressBook : I deleted AddressBook's folder in user/library/application support and put a backup of this folder : Ichat bounced and opened immediatly and works now very well.

Thanks.

For other Ichat's problems, I saw in the apple's forum the address of a site
about ichat : Ralph Johns' iChat Pages about internal errors :

http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page13.html

Hope that will help anybody else...
Have a good day
