i just got a yikes G4 (free :D ) and i want to replace the cd-rom with a (cheaper than an external firewire) internal cd-rw drive. of course they all say only works with windows, but i know that is not always the case. I just wanted to know which ones do work and work well with the G4.

I'm looking at the TDK inparticular.

thanks

Drive Type: CDRW

Drive Brand: TDK
Drive Model Number: Velocd 32x10x40x
Driver Used: Apple Standard
Mac Model: Apple G4 No AGP

Reader Comments: Okay, so I got this with a LOUSY firewire case from "computergeeks" which simply did not work (but that's another story) and stuck it into my Quicksilver 733 Mac G4 running OS 10.1.4. Two immediate problems: The drive doesn't fit well in the machine. It catches on the hinge when closing unless you hold the panel open. Also, iTunes doesn't see it.

Having said that, it burns wonderfully...at least in Toast, which I have been using. The burn-proof technology seems to work great and I have successfully burned at 32x onto media rated for less. I have not tried burning with Apple's system (what's it called again?) and I have not attempted to boot off of it since I plan on purchasing a new Firewire case from OWC and using it in there.

Still, despite the iTunes issue, this thing flies and I'm really happy with it. Burns full music cds in under 4 minutes.

Mike Comments: Discburner is the "finder" burning software name (i.e. inserting a blank CDR prompts the finder to pop up a dialog to format the CD in data, itunes or audio format). I don't think there's any TDK support in DB or iTunes however. But Toast is a lot more flexible than either of those.

also, when they say iTunes does not work with it, does that mean iTunes won't even see an audio CD that i insert?

If it isn't on the iTunes compatibility matrix on Apple's site, it is unlikely to work at all with iTunes. iTunes probably would not see the drive. Period.
