iDisk faster in Windows than Mac!!!

Friend of the elves
Yesterday I read at iTools site that the iDisk can be mounted in Windows. So, I try it at work with a Windows XP machine. The result was very good. But I noticed that the iDisk speed in Windows is faster than when I mount it on my Mac OS X. Besides, my home Internet connection is faster than in my work.
Well, it's a good notice for thos who use Windows more than mac ;(

I've noticed my iDisk access is painfully slow on my Mac with a cable modem. It's a little better if I mount it with AFP instead of WebDAV, but not much.

From work it is a little faster on NT4 but still makes me feel like Rip van Winkle.

iDisk is really really really slow under X. I'm using a tier-1 and it's still sloooow.. Both in XP and OS X..

Damn, I wish there was more fiberoptics in this world..

100% ack, my iDisk on MacOS X is also pretty slow (im on DSL).
But on Win2000 (@work), I can't even connect to it. :)

don't compare the speed of a 800 MHz PIII to a 800 MHz G4, that's a bit mean for the Intel box. ;)

What do you mean by 'faster' here? Finder responsiveness vs. Windows Explorer responsiveness? Or file transfer rates? ...

@fryke:

that has nothing to do with "compares" of other CPU's! .... i tried to connect the iDisk wit the VirtualPC under the Mac (!!!).... and it was much faster than on the same Mac in Mac OS! :)... -> twice as fast!
• in the connection time 4times faster
thats really fact!

Anyways, what are yall using ur iDisks for?
I also have a iDisk account, but havent really used it yet.

the speed has nothing to do with cpu speed.
When I use it with OS X, the finder freezes a lot, but in Windows is almost as fast as if I were connecting to a network folder.
For Dradts, who asked what I use de iDisk for: I don't use very much. just to upload and download stuff from home to work and viceversa.

I think it has also to do with the OS X Finder not being multithreaded. On Windows, every Explorer window is an extra thread. So when one window tries to refresh its content (like when something on the iDisk has changed) the other windows will still b responsible. In OS X, the Finder is not multithreaded at all! Thats y it is so slow to work with it. Hopefully Apple will make the Finder multithreaded in the future... :)

fryke, don't know about the others but by 'slow' I mean I get the BBoD for about 40 seconds while the Finder thinks about mounting the iDisk. Then I wait about 20 seconds to open any folder within it.

Dradts, I only use the iDisk to put files up that will later be on my HomePage. Even then it's just an experiment as I have my own web site hosted elsewhere with more goodies avail like php and mysql.

Annoying and depressing. When I access my iDisk folder via the same internet connection on my girlfriends windows laptop (nothing special: PII, 128Mb, 400 Mhz), its' much faster than from my new iMac. That's annoying, especially since I almost got as far as convincing her that the Mac is better in everything.

Is there any way I can improve performance?

I have tried a couple of times but it never works. I have windows 98 and I open internet explorer and type "http://idisk.mac.com/jermsmingy" and every once in a while a window will pop up asking for my user name and password and I type it in then it either says page can't be displayed or the server is unreponsive or something like that. It then tells me to contact root@idisk.mac.com. Any ideas on what my work. Thanks in advance.

Last year around this time i was working on a website for someone. Turns out the night we were gonna post it, I could not access the school site from my house, an hour away. I also couldn't save anything on my zip drive, because it stopped working. Plus, my cd burner would not even go through a complete burn (my fault, i had settings wrong). So my only option was to put the site on my idisk and then go to the school and grab it off of there.
Disaster. The site was about 20mb. Uploading to idisk took hours. I drove the hour long trip up to the school and when I got there, I couldn't access the idisk at all. Finally I was able to access it, only to find that I had to pull each individual file off of the idisk. I couldn't just drag the surrounding folder.
About a month later, the next time I was able to get up to that school, I put the rest of the site on there.
Total cramp on my digital lifestyle.

Sorry for off-topic

Just so you know, if you install Mac OS X 10.1.5, the speed of iDisk is dramatically increased. I'll bet you it's on par with the speed in Windows. :)
