I had an identical problem to the one posted in this ticket:
http://macosx.com/tech-support/safari-bug/1851.html
Safari was unexpectedly quitting every time I tried to close a window or a tab. I had the same OS version and an only slightly newer version of Safari (1.3.2).
I was preparing my own trouble ticket on the subject (the above one was archived). As I was crafting a detailed list of the steps I had taken to try to resolve the bug, I stumbled across the fix:
Check your input managers folder (~/Library/InputManagers).
My problematic one was iGetterIMBundle. I don't know if the original poster had iGetter, but it worked for me. Try moving them all (if there is more than one) to the Desktop and restarting Safari. Add them back in one at a time until you come across the problematic one. Toss it (obviously); a reinstall of the offending input manager (i.e. iGetter, Saft, etc.) is optional (I haven't yet reinstalled iGetter, but I suspect that if I do, it will work fine).
I just wanted to share this in case someone was searching the web for an answer--it would be preserved for posterity here.
