ignore permission on this volume not working

I have an external hard drive that I need to manually copy a large number of files to a LaCie ethernet drive on my network. My first attempt ended after a few hours of copying with the error "You do not have sufficient permissions...".

I first attempted to take ownership of everything on the drive, but still got the same error. I then selected "Ignore Permissions..." but again...same error.

Alot of the files are legacy (1980's) with lots of naming issues like "/" and "\" in the file names.

Should I try a command line chown to brute force open up all the permissions?

We are a small printing company and do not have a server set-up yet to create a real workgroup permissions/ single sign-on schema.

Any input is greatly appreciated.
