Can I save back to version 9 (or below)????

I use the latest stuff.... but the print bureau doesn't!

Try exporting. (File -> Export) That should give you some options. If not, export as a .pdf. They should be able to print that.

Yes.

Goto File > Export and export as Illustrator Legacy (ai)

In the Saving Dialog box, you can specify what version of Illustrator you want.

Hope if helps.

What's the verdict on file integrity when saving back to an earlier from Illustrator CS? I'm referring to problems that used to appear when saving an illustrator doc back to version 8 from version 9 or 10 (for example) particularly if transparency had been used. [such as half a word being rasterized, some text converted to outlines, spot colour blends turning to sh*te]. It it still essential carefully to check the result? Was this an issue with EPS save as rather than AI save as?

I think the issue has more to do with these newer features than it has to do with EPS vs. AI.

You can't use new features in **ANY** software and expect them to still work in an older version of the same software. If you use transparency, layer blending, etc., you've got to either output via a bureau who supports the new software, or raterize the whole lot once you're happy with it.

I have been working with CS quite a bit the past month or so, and CS has problems converting text from legacy files. It basically breaks each letter, or small groups of letters, up into separate bits of text. Very annoying. Of course, going the other way you lose some functionality; but the way around any text problems is to just convert the text to outlines.
