possibly a corrupted file, and some data (older data) remained intact, as did the thubnail view.

Thnx for the reply first. Yes, i am saving the files on the network and there is also the possibility that these files are open at the same time by another person, since the company is quite big and everyone has the access to these files. What do u suggest. Can i get the corrected, (last saved version) still back or should i in the future just make the safety copies on my computer...

I answered your question in the Volunteer forum. 
Two people cannot work on an illustrator file at the same time and have their edits saved concurrently. Definitely make a back up of this file and work on your own version (name it 2 or "xx_yourname.ai" or something recognizable. I would imagine since your company has this attitude toward its server there must be more chaos going on
