Hello,

I have a 2.4 GHz iMac Intel 24". During the last few months (3-4) the spinning frequency of the fans increased. I have been looking up the processes in the Activity Monitor but couldn't find apps that were asking too much of the processors.

A few days ago all of a sudden the iMac turned itsself off and restarted a few seconds later. since a 3-4 weeks I kept a close watch to the fans' speeds in StatPro. The results: optical drive 3000 rpm, Hard Drive 5000, CPU 3500.

Last night the iMac shut down again and it wouldn't reboot even after tipping the Power Button. After 15 minutes the iMac rebooted itself. Since then the iMac shut down several times.

I was able to run a Hardware Test and as a result I got the following code: 4SNS1/40000001:VGOR-10.644

Today when I got home from work my wife told me that the iMac shut down and didn't reboot.

I managed to reboot, performed a PRam reset. Then I reset the SMC after removing the Power cable.

I rebooted and after a few seconds after the startupboing the iMac shut down itself. After that trying to boot resulted in a decrease in time before shut down.

At the moment the only thing that happens after touching the power button is the spinning of the dvd-drive. Nothing else happens...

I already replaced the PRAM battery and reset the SMC after leaving the Mac unplugged for several hours.

The LED's inside on the logic board: led 1 - on, led 2 - on, led 3 - on, led 4 - off.
I don't have the possibility to check external video functionality.

thanks for all suggestions,
Paul

Sounds like your iMac could be overheating, or the video card is failing - perhaps because of that overheating.
Check your cooling air inlets:
The bottom edge of the iMac should be completely clear of lint/dust. A quick wipe, or even a vacuum brush along that bottom edge will be a good thing. The important spot, and one that is often missed is the round vent directly above the power plug (underneath the hinge). Make sure that vent is completely clear.
If those cooling areas are already clean, and you have 3 LEDs, but not the 4th, then your video card may be failing, or could even be the display panel.
The hardware test error code is a sensor error code, and pointing to the VGOR (video/graphics card?)
I think it's a good idea to take to an Apple service shop, and have them run Apple's service diagnostics, which can target specific parts of the hardware, with more detailed results.
They should also be able to give you a good quote for a repair.

Thank you for the advice... I have checked inlets, they are all open, still no fourth led so I guess I'll take it to an Apple service shop as you say. You confirmed my own opinion that that's the right decision. Thanks for that...

Yes, something is overheating and causing the shutdowns. It actually could even be the power supply itself. Those fans speeds are much higher than they should be. I'd suspect either HD, PSU, or graphics card. I am a certified tech at an Apple shop. Since AHT is flagging an error the Apple Service diags might be able to pinpoint it better, but most of the time these issues come down to swapping parts and testing to find a fix. Post back to let us know how it ends up.
