iMac 400 screen

goonies never say die
I've had this problem for a while now and was wondering if anyone else has had the same issue. One of my older Macs is an iMac DV/SE 400Mhz running OS 9.2.2. The problem is the screen. There is this thick, and I mean THICK, black border around the edge of the monitor. I have tried to adjust it in the Monitor Control Panel and the only thing that happens is that the screen shifts off the edge.

Is there anything I can do to get rid of this annoying black border or decrease it in size? Or is it just the fact that after five years of use, the CRT is dying?

Are you describing the (approx) 1/4 inch black border where video cannot be viewed? That's the mask for the CRT, you can't expand video past that point, it's the limit to the viewable area on a CRT. If the mask is more than about 1/4 inch then your CRT has a problem (could be either the PAV board in the iMac, or the CRT is going bad)

I think it is the mask of the CRT, but its really annoying. I guess I'm use to using my 17" Apple Studio Display with my G4 and when I occasional use my iMac, that black line really stands out. But if it is the CRT going bad, then I'm probably screwed, right?

how thick is it? If that's the normal about 1/4 inch, then it's just normal, no problem, just an adjustment you don't have, and not an indication of failure...

It's around 1/4 in. and I think it's normal. I probably have to play around with the different settings in the Monitor control panel.

If this is a 5 year old iMac, then you could be seeing the Power/Video board going bad. I have about 15 of these in a law office and I have had 5 of them repaired so far with various degrees of black border showing up. Usually it starts out with the video in the proper size at a cold start, but as it warms up it shrinks.

Apple Store near me replcaed the CRT in one recently and then never ran it long enough to make sure repair was good. I took it back and they then replaced the PAV and left the new CRT in the Imac. It works great now.

You can also try using the Geometry tab (if OS X) in Display Sys Prefs and try to expand area, but it may not work if it is failing.
