iMac and routers?

Hello,
I'm trying to get my internet working on my new iMac. We use a router in our home, which is connected to my laptop. My iMac recognizes the router, but still will not connect to the internet.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks in advance.

Is there any security enabled on the router like WEP, WPA, or WPA2? If so did you select the network and try to put in the password? Did it give an error message or time out? Is the iMac actually connected to the router and is the iMac's web browser not bringing up any pages?

Yes, it is password protected. When I first started the iMac I entered the password for it and it apparently connected to the router because it moved on to the next step.
It knows the router and all its information, and in the upper right hand corner it shows that its connected to the router, it just won't connect to the internet.

I apologize for my immature computer terms, as you can see I'm an amateur.

You may want to check you airport settings in system preferences/network. Make sure under TCP/IP the configuration is set to using DHCP as opposed to manual. Also under proxies make sure nothing is checked.
