iMac can't see the external HD after upgrade to 10.5.7

Hey all. So yesterday I upgraded to the latest version of osx, and suddenly upon reboot, osx could no longer find my external HD. The HD sounds fine, like usual. I turn it off and back on and I can hear the drive spinning up. But osx can't see it. I have tried rebooting my iMac several times, restarting the external HD several times, unplugging and repluging the usb cable several times, plugging the usb cable into different ports. Nothing.

Thsi weekend I will bring my Powerbook G4 home from work and see if it can see the external HD, but until then, is there anything else I can do? Any troubleshoting I missed?

No, Disk Utility can't see it.

I've tested the usb ports and they all work with other things so they are working. I ran Onyx and repaired permissions and cleaned the various caches. Still nothing. I'm out of ideas. I use this external drive as my bak drive (time machine) and also for misc storage (eg movie files, some music, other big files). So I suppose it's not the end of the world if I lose it, but I'd still rather not!
