iMac G3: tried 2 install OSX BEFORE firmware update

I know, I know, wrong order, but here I am. A working 400Mhz G3 with a DVD slot load, 1 GB of (working) RAM running 9.2.1. Put the OSX install disk, reboot, try to install and the message told me to install the firmware first. Only it will not boot.

It chimes, hard drive spins, green light is on, hard drive searching to boot, then...green light goes off in about 10 seconds and hard drive slowly spins to a halt.

I cannot boot up and get the screen to turn on. I have
•booted with command-shift-p-r
•pressed the programming button while booting, before and after chime
•pressed the reset button
•hooked up a FW drive and tried to boot both OSX and OS9 CD's
•put a CD in the iMac slot drive, OSX and OS9 and tried to boot (luckily the paper clip let me get these disks out!)
•put in a fresh 3.6V battery (and did not get electrocuted)
•pushed the white spring loaded button just above the Airport card while it wasn't running (I don't have any idea what this fairly big button is or does)
•pushed the CUDA button for 1 sec, for 5 sec, for 10 sec both while computer unplugged and off and while running (I hope it's a little black button to the left of the RAM)
•booted with the shift key down
•booted with DiskWarrior

Nothing works! Interestingly, once it spins down and the green power light goes out, if I press the power light, it comes on but no chime, no HD spin. And if I hold the button for 10 seconds and make it turn off, I can't use the power light to do anything but make the power light go on. To hear the chime again, I have to physically unplug and replug the power cord.

Since the computer was working perfectly just before I tried to upgrade, I am certain it's not DOA. Gotta be some kinda trick. And I know someone out there knows the answer.

Sorry for a long first post, but I'm desperate. The kinds are bugging me!

I did the exact same thing. Unfourtinatly, my fix required a harddrive that had mac OS 9 installed on it, and not os x. I then had to reset the RAM, which i did by replacing it with that of my powermac. Basicly, I shut down the imac, took out the harddrive and RAM, put the OS 9 harddrive in (a blank harddrive might also work, but you'll have to install os 9 on it then), took out all ram (the RAM seemed to have "memorys" of os x), then booted up. I then installed the firmware update in OS 9, then the imac was ready for OS X.
