Imac G4 Airport Extreme Connection

I have noticed a bad drop in performance with a new airport extreme card in my 17" 1G iMac. I switched back to a cable connection again and life is sweet, but I am tied to the basestation. Should I return it for service. Can you be too close to the basestation to get good reception. They are about 18" a part now. Any help would be appreciated.
