I have this flat panel imac g4 that just will not boot up. I've done everything, the C key with the disk. The option key, the cmd-optn-shft-deleate key. I've even bought a whole new internal hard drive. I just can not get the system folder. Can any please, please help me.

It seems that it does not have a Mac OS system installed. Have you tried doing an Archive and Install with the discs that came with that Mac?

Are you sure these discs were the ones that came with that Macintosh? I don't think that it would have done that if it were. Sounds like you might be using a disc from another Macintosh, which would explain why it would spit it out. Unless it's the disc that shipped with that Mac originally or a retail version of Mac OS X, then it's not going to boot from it.

At the very least, it should have booted to the installer from the disc if it was the correct disc. If they are the correct discs, makesure that they're not scratched up too badly. If so, then you're going to have to purchase another copy.

The only other thing I can think of to do is to reset the PRAM on the Mac by holding down Command-Option-P-R right when you hear the Mac startup chime. Keep it held down for a few chimes and then let it go.

The other thing you can do is go into Open Firmware and when you see a prompt, type the following:

reset-nvram (hit Return)
reset-all (hit Return)

THen try and see if it will boot at all to the hard drive or with the discs.

Well, I did all that and put in disk one while holding down the 'c' key. I get a mac happy face and it stopped thier.

Hmm....it seems that it wants to boot into Mac OS 9. That would be the only time you see the happy Mac icon. Usually with OS X, it's the gray Apple with the spinner. Have you tried holding down the Shift key after you hear the Macintosh startup chime? This should boot up the OS with extensions disabled in OS 9. From there, you can choose to select the Mac OS X System folder from the Startup Disk control panel.

I just installed a new 160GB ULTRA ATA/100 7200 RPM 8MB Cache 3.5 inch internal Drive. I zapped the pram and even tried to open with 0S9 disk that came with it. Still I get question mark with out a disk and it stopes with disk.

Are you trying to install 10.4 in that Mac ?
If soo i think you should install only for now 9.2.2 and after a few days working well ...try to install only 10.2. and upgrade to 10.2.8 after .
And BTW you fresh 160GB ULTRA ATA/100 7200 RPM 8MB, it will not be see with your G4 ...soo check if your are on a bus speed 133 Mhz...if not so it wiil not see it .!
It will see only the half of ..like around 75 gig . to bad but it likes that .
Your 160GB ULTRA ATA/100 7200 RPM 8MB it still there with no problem but your MAC don't see it :-(((
P.S. why you put a 3.5 inch internal drive ?
Only Pc's users still want that 1.44 mo....woooooo :-))))

No, I do not have 10.4. I do have all the disk that came with the coputer and 10.3 panther. Are you saying that the new hard drive is not compatible with this Imac?

BTW, what are the specifications of your iMac G4? There were various iterations of this model.

Check the following link and let us know exactly which iMac G4 you have. Then we can determine exactly what the problem is.

If it's the very early model, then g3t is right to suspect the hard drive. Consider that the controller on that Mac won't support the entire size of the drive because their weren't any hard drives of that size back then. Most newer Macs will support current massive storage drives since they have the newer controllers. You'll also find this on PCs, except that most towers can have a newer controller card installed to support the larger drive. This is also possible with the older Power Macintosh towers if Mac drivers are provided by the manufacturer or if it's already supported in Mac OS X.
