imac g5 kernal panic

I told my dad that he would be better off ditching his pc for a mac - so now he's getting repeated kernal panics on his new iMac G5. Can someone help me to find a solution because I'm very embarrassed !!

His last email reads -

I cleared log and then forced a panic attack - logged off, clicked restart - screen goes blank and it just sits there with faint fan noise - after about 45s fan comes on full blast - force off by holding power switch for 5s - waited 2m and powered on.

Resultant log readout is :-

Mac OS X Version 10.4.3 (Build 8F46)

Hi neil,

that is not the content of a kernel panic file.
In case he had a kernel panic, it should be found with name "panic.log" in his system. The error above is from crash reporter, not from a kernel panic.

So he is able to log in to the system?

Gosh thankyou so much for your quick replies!

A bit odd having to try and converse in the third person but I'll do my best from what he has told me so far ....

Apparently this all started when he accidently changed the name of the home file by accident so when the machine restarted it shoved that file into
the users folder and set about organising a new home
file.

He then sent me this :

"Having done archival reinstall and all is reasonably back to normal bar reinstalling updates. Stange thing that Mac help doesn't work properly
after reinstall -- will prob. have to go for a clean
start.
PS have seen mention that the update to 10.4.3 causes
problems. One such-I think_ was that restart went
funny ie it didn't happen and a fan came on with
turbo drive -- I think it is called kernel panic."

I believe he then did a clean install of 10.4+updates but the problem didn't stop. He also sent me this after one of the crashes :

"The crash report which comes up because of incorrect shutdown and which many a time I have sent off to Apple said all of this :-

panic(cpu 0 caller 0x0009A078): mapping_remove: hw_rem_map failed - pmap = 00364000, va = 0000000000002000, code = 00ED3102

Soooo... from what i can gather, the problem seems to be when he logs out and restarts - machine locks up and fans go on full blast.

Any ideas anyone?

Easy fix:

1) Save documents, etc. to a DVD/CD
2) Reformat/Reinstall Tiger
3) ????
4) Profit!

Ok, the last 2 was a joke. But I meant the first 2. That's the simpletons method of thinking (I guess). Erase the problem ENTIRELY! :D

Yes but, from what i can gather, that is what he has done but still the problem seems to exist!

I'm going to try and get some more info out of him and post it here.

Thanx for all your help so far - please don't go away - I'm scared he will sell it and buy a PC !!

OK so more info from my poor father sitting next to his sick imac!
---

"Well I can't find a file called panic.log. Could you ask him where it
should be ?. Is there some search facility (like explorer in windows)
which goes thro' the whole disc and finds what you want ?. Spotlight
doesn't come up with anything.

Way back at the beginning I clean started to get rid of the last
previous owners details, memory says that restart etc were OK but at some
time and I would guess after getting on line and updating, it started
acting up. This was long before the home folder problem.

Since then I have done one more clean start and perhaps three
archived starts - each time the problem has reappeared and I haven't
spotted any particular activity that kicks it off.

> So he is able to log in to the system?

Tell him that I can log on (if that is what he means) with no problem
and everything else seems to work OK"

Hi just trying to bump this thread up a bit. All the people who helped at first seem to have wandered off. Is this topic too complicated? I thought there were a few experts here!!

hello?

hello?

He bought this machine second hand? How old is it? Does the serial number match anything in this range?

W8435xxxxxx - W8522xxxxxx
QP435xxxxxx - QP522xxxxxx
CK435xxxxxx - CK522xxxxxx
YD435xxxxxx - YD522xxxxxx

What are the system stats? Is the RAM from a third party vendor?

if his fans are blowing and you can hear them. Then it is a hardware problem.
I just told someone else on this forum to do what i did..
The logic-board and power supply will have to be replaced..
Apple will give you a fight on this..
My fans were blowing unusually high and my imac g5 was going to sleep every 5 to 10 seconds..
after repeated trips to Apple and them insisting that it was a software problem.
i told them that i reinstalled my os ( panther then tiger ) and it was till doing it..
that is when they finally took action.
they finally switched out my power supply and logic board..
Now my imac runs quietly. i really have to strain to hear the fans...
Good Luck and take the fight to them

My fans on my G4 Tower seem to be running very high, although no other problems reported. Does having the fans run high suggest a pending problem?

I don't have a G4 so i will not try to speculate....
the common suggestion that i was getting on my G5 from the forum boards was that it may have been a power issue, for my problem...
I don't know if that could also apply to the G4?

Well, you're serial isn't in the range of machines with known power/video issues. But if after a clean install (ie reformat & reinstallation) the problem still persists I would take it to Apple to fix as the problem is probably hardware related. Since it sounds like he got the machine second hand, I don't know how Apple honors the warranty (did the previous owner purchase applecare?)

Anyone here know the details on that?

OK sooooo the problem was a bloody USB modem !!

Yes I know it's an obvious place to look but this is my dad's first mac and he naturally assumed that it was something HE had done wrong with the OS (a common occurence when people migrate from a PC)

Anyway thankyou so much for all your help - this is a great site (except for the forum search function not working) and I hope this topic might save a few days of grief for anyone with the same problem.

Moral of story - DO NOT USE USB MODEMS WITH TIGER - buy an ethernet router - no drivers required.

cheers, neil.
