iMac+Mac mini = not what I wanted!?

Hey, I've had an iMac (G4 angle-poise blah-blah) for a few years now, and she really has changed my life. The problem is that she's running pretty slow these days, I've crammed the hard-drive with way too many songs and even more artwork. I picked up a Mac mini in the hope that it would be easy to strap it to the iMac as an external drive, throw all of my programs, tunes and artwork onto said drive, and use the iMac as the processing work-horse. It ain't that easy though. I had a guy come around (£25 an hour), but am no closer to what I really want. He set it up so that my iMac is running Tiger (through the mini?) Oh what the hell, even I can't explain... if you can help, then please do. Thanks if you can.

You can vnc into the mini and run Tiger I suppose but that would be crazy. The mini is faster and more capable than the imac so get a cheap crt or lcd monitor to use with it. You can then set up the imac as a shared network volume. It could be used to store documents, video, music etc. It could also become a music/print server.
