iMac mod?

not sure if "hardware" is the right place for this, but i would think mod's would fall into this heading...

i have a iMac G4 that I am thinking about modding (cause I cant seem to sell it, and im bored, and want to try it out) the case and internals. Internally I was thinking of upping the RAM, and trying to squeeze a neon in there to show through the top and bottom holes. Purple? Blue? I think blue.

questions:
1. How hard is it to take apart the casing of the base and the monitor? I want to paint it, and was wondering if it would be easier to take the casing off to paint it.

2. Is there enough room inside to fit a light? i know its cramped in there, but was curious if it were possible.

found a link of some iMac mods, even one that is similar to what i want to do, but it is in Japanese. going to try the google translator.

any advice? warnings? thanks

If you're going to paint it and want it to look half-way decent, you're going to need to disasesmble the base down to the plastic, then strip the paint off the plastic and paint the inside of the plastic.

I don't think you'll get very satisfactory results trying to paint the outside of the case.

thanks, yeah, looks like quite a job. i want the paint to look like a car's, with the clearcoat gloss, the black imac is close to what i want to do, but very glossy.

A clear coat won't help much since you'll never see it if you're painting the inside. The outside of the case is too smooth to properly adhere paint to. It might work for a while, but in the long run it'll not live up to your expectations.

Best bet is to get a good quality gloss paint, preferably an automotive urthane based paint. I'd recommend a House of Kolor paint. Their URETHANE ENAMEL (UB) or POLYURETHANE ENAMEL (UFB) in Jet Black is probably you best bet.

Practice ALOT befor you shoot it, you'll only get one chance. Also, remember that a gloss paint is the hardest to shoot and will show variations and errors the most. Good Luck with the project!
