iMac or PowerMac?

Ok,at the moment, ii use my iBook (with Pro Keyboard and Wireless IntelliMouse) as *my* computer. I also have a PeeCee running XP, hosting my DSL Connection, music and a heap of other stuff for my iBook (poor lil' thing has a mere 10Gb hard Drive) ... but using a 12" notebook @ 1024*768 can soon get annoying, day by day... things aren't helped with just 320Mb and a G3 500Mhz ... but hey! ... So yea, i hope a desktop is on the horizon, feel much more "comfortable" using a desktop machine, as exactly that!

For a while, i've looked to get an iMac, as my Desktop, but after recent Pricing and Spec updates, it leaves me a little confused?! ... i looked top pay upto about £1500 or so for a machine really ... So yea... that could pretty much get me the top of the line iMac ... (may as well pay that little more for the extra 2 Inches ... Guys, they DO Matter :P ;))

Or by Contrast, i could go for a 1Ghz PowerMac, and get a 17" Studio Display, for about the same price ... they were what i was looking at, but hey?! ... i am stuck really ... nothing is decided, i might become tight, and decide to cut back, lol, i dunno ... but i need a desktop ... but at the same time, i don't perceive me to wanting 2 make that much of an upgrade 2 my comp ... So the upgradability of the PowerMac never really appealed to me. How loud are the PowerMacs?! i have a PeeCee which Purr's FAR TOO Loud, something i could do without really ... (its in my room @ nite) ... it really is bliss to leave just my ibook running sometimes (altho it relies upon the PeeCee for data and the DSL, i am kinda stuck :-/)

...but anyway... some opinions would be nice ... both obviously look great ... and aren't iMac's looking for a spec update soon? ... that *Could* Sway me 2wards one ...

i'd appreciate your thoughts and opinions guys!

Well, i have a 17 inch iMac and I love it! The only thing, it has 2x AGP (but its still pretty fast). I didnt know this when I bought it. I thought it had 4x. LOL!! Stupid me:p. but anywho, yeah...and sometimes i wish i had gotten a desktop for expandability...but I still like me Mac ALOT! It has yet to fail me and is really quiet (even when the fan is going full blast! I leave the iMac on at night sometimes just to let it hum me to sleep while it runs limewire or something:D).

One important question for you: Do you want expandibility? If not, the iMac is perfect for my friend. Other wise get the PowerMac. OH! and if you are planning on getting an iMac..wait. Im sure apple will upgrade them VERY soon.:D

I prefer my iMac to my friends PowerMac (manly because my friends PowerMac is "substantially" louder), but having said that, the new PowerMac are supposed to be much more quiet. So you might want to wait for someone to post who has bought that one. My friends PowerMac is much faster really though. But he has a dual processor... Not sure which one.

This iMac of mine is my first mac, so maybe that is why I love it so, but I really do. No matter how old it will get in the future I will just never want to let go of it.

hey guys, appreciate the responses ... i was looking to buy via Credit card ... but after looking @ Apple's Financing, Applying for about £2000 sounds about right for me ... but leaves me a little bedazzled?!

i guess i was looking @ the Bottom Line PowerMac and 17" Studio Display ... or the Top of the line iMac? .... roughly relate to the same price, give or take £50 ... but i am kinda "lost" ? ... which?!!?!??! ... If i choose PowerMac, i could apply for AFS now ... if i choose iMac, i sure have to wait for what sounds 2 imminent upgrades ... (and i am an impatient kinda guy! )

What are people's views on the the bassline 1Ghz PowerMac?! ... And also, the studio display? ... i heard one peep speak not so highly of the 17" model :( ... Come on peeps ... help some1 in need! lol

...oh, and SuperDrive!? ... is it really a big Deal?! ... (obviously i ask due to the difference between TOP iMac, and baseline PM)

NeYo

PS... Yea, i know its me who is buying 'n' all ... but i sure would appreciate the input ... its a lot of money on a new computer ... and either way a huge jump from my iBook 500 / 320 !

how much interest is apple credit charging you?

in anycase, the base powermac and 17" display are a pretty good deal.

it would only be $200 more than a 17" iMac.

think of a iMac as a laptop purchase in the respect that you have practically 0 expandability.

the powermac on the other hand will be able to grow with you. faster video card, more HDs, two optical drives, etc.

the powermacs are faster to with 1MB L2 cache which i dont think the next gen. iMacs will have.

DVD burning is great. if you backup a lot of stuff, DVD is the way to go. with the powermac you can always choose to go that route later.

if you're going to spend the cash and keep this Mac for more than 2-3 years, id go with a new powermac, studio display combo.

Well I'm sure you read what I wrote at neowin, but I'll echo it here

Pmac will give you expandability on every area. As for that 17"lcd, Apple's is very high priced compared to other companies, and lower quality. Check out viewsonic, sony, or nec for a better, cheaper 17".

no way. the Apple LCD nearly always defeats the competition in reviews (zdnet, cnet, etc.). now it's even cheaper, so you can't go wrong. the apple LCD is crystal clear and nearly the best quality you can get.

zdnet

also, dont' believe what zdnet says about tilting the monitor. all you have to do is grab the top of the monitor and tilt it. the hinge on the back stays put.
