I have an 17" iMac here in the US, and I am moving back to Australia. The voltage in Australia is 240v. Can I take my iMac with me and just get a new power cord? is there an internal transformer? Or will I have to get some mods done in Australia? Or is it all different and it would be easier just to buy a new one there?

It'll work fine, Here's the power requirements from the Apple specs page for the Imac :
Electrical and environmental requirements
Meets ENERGY STAR and TCO 95 requirements
Line voltage: 90V to 264V AC
Frequency: 47Hz to 63Hz, single phase

The system will automatically switch to correct power, all you need is the proper cord (or just a plug adapter)

Have a great trip, mate!

Uh. you may want to check that. I have a g4 tower, so it may be different, but on mine, and every other power supply i've seen, there is a little red switch to choose been 110 and 220v. yes we have 240v here in aus, but it says 220, or 220-240. anyways. if you have that switch, make sure it's set correctly first.

there's no mechanical switch, the power supply is auto-switching. Towers (like the G4/G5) usually have a manual voltage switch, Imacs do not.
