imac reformat help

Hi all my first post and I need help, sorry I don't know much about macs(nor pcs lol)my problem is I bought an imac cheap but the problem is I need to format it, I have tiger osx on dvd but the Imac is cd rom, I have an external usb dvd is there any way to boot from the external dvd to format the mac ? sorry but this is my first mac and I know nothing at all about them thanks in advance for your help.

Apple has an exchange program. You can exchange the Tiger DVD for CD's;

Is it not possible to boot from the external drive? Not even with Startup Disk Preference?
