iMac refresh rates

Hey,

I've got an external 19" Monitor hooked up to my iMac, cause I hate the iMac's screen. Trouble is, the external monitor can only run at the same resolution and refresh rate as the iMac.

Does anyone know where I can get a tool to allow operating the external monitor at a different resolution to the iMac's built-in screen?
