iMac scary display problem!

Hi all, today I had the first problem - ever - with my iMac I've had since January. I took a few screen shots...please take a look:

The the parts that are colored and crazy looking were fluttering and changing a bit, too. It was happening with applications and also going away and coming back...I restarted, let my machine cool down, and now it's fine, but I'm afraid it will come back. What could this have been? Thanks in advance!!

First off, I would like to ask you this: have you ever opened your computer case at all? That would be critical to my response.
