what could have caused my I Mac to start smoking and then the monitor went balnk?
IMac started smoking and the monitor went blank

Plugging it to a power outlet without surge protection in an old house.
Some internal component frying.
A lot of other potential things.
If the Mac physically started to smoke, call AppleCare - even if your Mac is out of warranty. Smoke is always a security issue.
