iMac won't sleep

My 600MHz iMac seems to have turned into an insomniac. I have the screen saver set to turn on after 15 minutes and the sleep timer in Energy Saver set to go to sleep after 25 minutes. The screen saver kicks in but the computer doesn't go to sleep. The screen does go blank, even though I don't have a separate timer for that. In fact, when I set the iMac to have a separate timer for the screen to shut off, the entire computer improperly shut down. I have it set to wake for network admimistrator access under options and that is all. My computer is connected to the campus network but I don't see how that would affect it. Any ideas? Know of any good sleeping pills I could give it?

Will it go to sleep if you choose to put it to sleep, (sleep under the Apple, or just press your power button (don't hold, just push for less than a second)? My system gets a little stubborn about sleep ev3ery cou[ple of months or so, and some simple maintenance gets it back in line, sleeping normally (manual sleep SHOULD work within 3-5 seconds)
These can include: FSCK from single-user mode, repair permissions with disk utility, and delete system cache files with a utility such as OnyX or Maintain1.
These 3 actions may not always be needed, but don't hurt, and most often will get sleep working OK again (and can help many other performance issues)

Are you running Konfabulator? I've found that there are either certain widgets, or Konfabulator itself that keeps my powerbook from going to sleep (when it's open).

never determined which were the culprits, but you may try killing konfabulator all together and see if that helps.

I do not have Konfabulator installed. I tried fsck, repairing permissions, and downloaded Onyx to get rid of system caches. All of these did work; the computer screen goes blank and the hard drive remains spinning and the white light on the front remains on but it does not go to sleep.

If file sharing is ON the computer doesn't go to sleep... In general Sharing capablities do not let your Mac sleep! Read my signature for more info...
